ChongMing Bridge, Structural Health Monitoring System

Chongming Bridge The Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge project will connect Shanghai with the island called Chongming in the Yangtze delta. The crossing is in total about 15 km long and passes a smaller island in between, and the project comprises a twin tube bored tunnel in the southern channel and a bridge in the northern channel. The link is for road traffic and light rail traffic. The bridge is approximately 6 km long and includes a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of about 700 m with a twin box girder. The approach bridges will be a combination of precast segmental 60 m spans and 100 m long composite girder spans.

Conceptual design for the ChongMing SHMS was based on a philosophy that the system shall provide an advanced monitoring of the bridge providing few but clearly understandable data in order to: Carry out design checks, Checks on extreme loadings as strong winds, earthquakes and ship impacts, Fatigue, force redistribution and settlement monitoring and Bridge rating and service lifetime calculations. Also a cost break down for the system was given.

Great Belt Link, System for Assessment of Damping and Wind Induced Response

Great Belt Link

Due to girder vibrations induced by vortex shedding, a preliminary monitoring system was designed and installed to assess through response measurements the problems with respect to severity and frequency. The vortex shedding problem was solved by installation of guide vanes. As part of the design calculation, the measured response data was analysed and structural damping was estimated based on a system identification technique with ARMA models and by calibration of natural frequencies with a finite element model.

Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Causeway, Structural Monitoring System

With the construction of the 36 km long causeway linking Kuwait City with the planned Subiyah New Town on the northern side of the Kuwait Bay. The causeway will be a combination of low-level bridges, embankments and transition islands. A main bridge will span the navigation channel and a free flow interchange at the Shuwaikh Port will connect the causeway to the Kuwait City.

The environment is very aggressive leading to a large amount of corrosion monitoring sensors. Also the risk of ship impact is taken care of by the structural monitoring system.
